NHL Product Comparison

Licensed NHL Merchandise - Product Comparison

Visible and high profile use of NHL marks by counterfeiters on low-quality products is harmful to NHL marks and to the overall image and reputation of the NHL and its teams. Below are examples of two low-quality counterfeit items compared to approved officially-licensed NHL products.

1. Holograms Sticker/Hangtag

GENUINE
Presence of NHL hologram hangtag or sticker.
COUNTERFEIT
Lacks NHL hologram hangtag or sticker.

2. Licensee Label

GENUINE
Licensee (e.g. Reebok) clearly identified on tag or label.
COUNTERFEIT
Label/tag is generic, identifies a brand that is not an NHL licensee, or is snipped/cut.

3. Logos

GENUINE
Logos clear/legible and, for licensed screen printed items, accompanied by a ® or TM trademark designation.
COUNTERFEIT
Logos frequently missing ® or TM trademark designations and executed with fuzzy screen printing, inaccurate colors, and/or poor embroidery.

NHL Product Identification

Licensed NHL Product

  • A hologram hangtag or hologram sticker, typically bearing a unique serial number, should be affixed to all licensed NHL merchandise available for sale.
  • The NHL Official Licensed Product Logo should, in most cases, be prominently displayed in its entirety and should include ® adjacent to the NHL Shield in all instances.

  • Most headwear and soft goods should have a sewn-in label which includes the NHL Official Licensed Product Logo or the NHL Shield logo, an NHL copyright notice (© NHL), and the name of the licensee. Licensee identification may not be included or screen printed on the same line as the NHL copyright notice.

  • Team screen printed products should bear the proper trademark designation (TM or ®) at the bottom right of the team name and team logo.

  • All Licensed Products typically include a copyright notice in the following form: © NHL

NHL Hologram Stickers and Hologram Hangtags

With few exceptions, an NHL hologram sticker or hangtag should appear on all licensed products available for sale.
